Två dagar med Johnstone

Jag fick oväntat möjligheten att kunna följa med en impro-workshop med Keith Johnstone, ledargestalten inom improvisationsteater. Två hela dagar har jag som åskådare kunnat följa med hans arbete på Boulevardteatern med en grupp skådespelare och teaterverksamma.

Att jag inte personligen kunde delta i övningarna gjorde inte upplevelsen sämre, tvärtom så kunde jag koncentrera mig bättre på att ta upp anteckningar då. Dessa anteckningar tänkte jag dela med mig. Samma inlägg (plus en bild) kan hittar på Interacting Arts blogg.




Det intressanta med personen Keith Johnstone är att han är som vemsomhelst. När han kommer intassande på Boulevardteatern kvart före nio, tar det en stund innan jag inser att det är Johnstone. Och vad är det med det, han är ju en vanlig människa. En äldre, ganska rund och satt man med ett lätt frånvarande leende.
Om något så säger det mer om min uppfattning om honom, hur min fantasi gudomligförklarat honom. Hans ord och gärningar har gett honom en aura av ett ouppnåeligt snille, men här står han som en vanlig människa bland oss. Det är inget speciellt med honom, förutom att det är Keith Johnstone.

Det är en helt overklig känsla att vara här. Tröttheten gör säkert sitt, men det är också något annat. Spänd förväntan som plötsligt uppfylls. Vart tar man då vägen?

Så otroligt lugn och karismatisk sitter han där i soffan, pillar på naglarna och pratar till synes förstrött men ändå otroligt fokuserat.

You´re never going to know what the other one wants, if you only say yes.

A perfect story reincludes all elements. That said, a perfect story is not the best story. The best story is the one with the best trouble.


Shape is given when you remember what you started with.


If you are funny, people want you to be funnier.


You might want to win, and then it blocks you. We have that terrible impulse to win.


Whatever you do, dont think!


If you´re stressed, you´re thinking ahead and the others can´t work with you. Don´t plan.


You can´t stop yourself having ideas. Just don´t hold on to them.


Be truthful.


If you can level with the others´ status, they will feel you´re one of them.


When the one who improvises don´t know what to say, he becomes more interesting.


A character doesn´t save you on the stage.


A character adds color to the picture, but it isn´t the picture.


If you´re saying a mantra, you won´t have stage freight.


You don´t need the mantra. The mantra stops you doing things that spoil the acting.


The work in class should not be better than work in public.


If you know the pig is worried and you see a picture of the pig, it looks worried.


If the story does it, you don´t have to do it.


A good idea is something that turns the actor on.


Theatre should disturb if it can.


We project on to everything, we can´t help it.


The power of doing nothing is amazing.


Hate is more commercial [than love].


You don´t care about the audience when you have a mantra going.


The intellect is not the creative source of anything.


You have to get your social self out of the way to allow other things to appear.


Laughter [from the audience] is deceptive.


You don´t have to plan, just open your mouth and you will say something.


We don´t have to teach spontaneity, we only have to take away the things that are in its way.


Stay inside the circle.


People are told to think outside the box, but that makes it impossible to improvise with you.


The more obvious you are, the more clever you seem.


You can´t ask an intelligent question because then you know the answer.


Acting is mysterious.
